ABSTRACT

This research project aims to explore effective strategies for curbing graduate unemployment through adequate skills development in business education programs in universities in South-West Nigeria. The issue of graduate unemployment is a pressing concern in Nigeria, and it is essential to investigate strategies that can enhance the employability of business education graduates. This study seeks to identify the key skills required by employers, assess the current level of skills development in business education programs, explore the challenges faced in imparting adequate skills, and propose recommendations for effective strategies to bridge the skills gap and reduce graduate unemployment.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys, interviews, and document analysis to collect data from employers, business education students, and educators in universities in South-West Nigeria. The research objectives include identifying the skills required by employers, assessing the current level of skills development in business education programs, exploring the challenges faced in imparting adequate skills, and proposing effective strategies for skills development.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into effective strategies for curbing graduate unemployment through skills development in business education programs. The research will identify the specific skills that employers value in business education graduates, such as communication skills, problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, teamwork, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, the study will assess the current level of skills development in business education programs, examining the alignment of the curriculum with industry needs, the effectiveness of teaching and assessment methods, and the integration of practical experiences and internships. Furthermore, the research will explore the challenges faced in imparting adequate skills, including limited resources, outdated curriculum, faculty capacity, and industry-academic disconnect. Based on the findings, recommendations will be proposed for effective strategies to bridge the skills gap, including curriculum enhancement, faculty development programs, industry collaboration, experiential learning opportunities, and entrepreneurship education.

The implications of this research extend to business education students, educators, employers, policymakers, and universities. The findings will provide business education students with insights into the skills they need to develop to enhance their employability, guiding their efforts towards skill acquisition and self-improvement. Educators can utilize the research findings to inform curriculum development and instructional practices, ensuring that the necessary skills are integrated into business education programs. Employers can benefit from the research findings by gaining an understanding of the skills they should look for in business education graduates, informing their recruitment and selection processes. Policymakers can consider the recommendations proposed in the research to inform policies and initiatives that promote skills development and reduce graduate unemployment. Universities can utilize the findings to enhance their business education programs, aligning them with industry needs and improving graduates’ employability prospects.

In conclusion, this research project explores effective strategies for curbing graduate unemployment through adequate skills development in business education programs in universities in South-West Nigeria. By identifying key skills, assessing skills development, exploring challenges, and proposing recommendations, stakeholders can work towards bridging the skills gap and reducing graduate unemployment.
