ABSTRACT

This research focused on the impact of poverty on democratic consolidation in Ohaukwu Local government Area of Ebonyi State, the objectives were to ascertain if poverty is instrumental to the poor consolidation of democracy in Ohaukwu local Government Area, to find out if the poor nature of the electorates makes them prone to manipulations by politicians. The methodology used was inferential and descriptive statistics. Marx theory of poverty was employed as its theoretical framework of analysis. The hypothesis was that there is no significant relationship between poverty and democratic consolidation in Ohaukwu local Government Area, there is a significant relationship between poverty and the consolidation of democracy in Ohaukwu . The results and findings of this research majorly is that the poor people cannot participate effectively in the politics and economy of our country, the more poverty there is, the more it is evident how the people loose faith in the capacity of democratic institutions to improve their welfare. More so poverty tends to be the cause of many social crimes in the study area. The study recommends that there is the need for political education by the media and civil society organization to reduce and redefine the people’s interest in politics, Poverty alleviation programmes must be demand driven and formulated bottom up with the poor as active stakeholders in the decision­ making process.
