Abstract:

This study investigates the impact of quarry activities carried out by Public Work Nigeria Ltd on the physical environment in the Vwang area of Plateau State, Nigeria. Construction activities heavily rely on quarry stone aggregate for structural and developmental purposes; however, the potential environmental implications of such quarry industries are often overlooked. To assess the consequences of quarry mining on the environment, an observational method was employed. The ambient air quality and noise level were measured using Probe Toxic Gas Analyser model TG/501 and ATP 901A Sound meter, respectively. Additionally, a quantitative method was used to gauge residents’ perception of the quarry’s impact on their environment.

The obtained results were compared against FMEnvs and WHO reference standards, revealing that the air quality and noise level during operation hours exceeded the acceptable limits for SO2 (100µg/m3)/(80µg/m3), NO2 (60µg/m3)/(40µg/m3), CO (11.4µg/m3)/(10µg/m3), and SPM10 (250µg/m3)/(50µg/m3) in the air. Furthermore, the noise level exceeded the limits of 70dB for the day and 60dB for the night. The study also found that dust and vibration shocks significantly affected the air quality and approximately 42.4% of buildings within the study area.

To mitigate the impact of quarry pollutants on humans and their physical environment, it is recommended that the quarry company adopt modern technology and instruments and implement effective protective measures such as tree planting and water sprinkling on stones before crushing. These measures can help in safeguarding the environment and promoting sustainable quarry operations.
