ABSTRACT

This research explores the role of pastors in evangelism using Christ Apostolic Church, Holy Ghost Zonal Headquarters, Abeokuta as the case stduy. The study population consisted of members of the church, including pastors, elders, church workers, women leaders, and youths, with an estimated population size of approximately 500 individuals. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select a sample size of 120 respondents who had experience and involvement in evangelism activities within the church. Data were collected using closed-ended questionnaires designed to capture pertinent information about the involvement of pastors in evangelism. Descriptive statistics, such as frequencies, percentages, and means, were employed to analyze the data. The findings of this research revealed that a significant proportion of respondents (75%) believed that the Bible emphasizes the responsibility of pastors to actively engage in evangelism. Additionally, 50% of respondents recognized the significant role of pastors in leading and organizing evangelistic campaigns and outreach events. Moreover, a substantial majority (69.2%) agreed that pastors’ active involvement in evangelism positively influenced the numerical growth of the church. However, it was noted that 54.2% of respondents acknowledged the challenges faced by pastors in balancing their time between pastoral duties and evangelistic activities. The research also highlighted the importance of specialized training and resources for pastors, with 82.5% of respondents expressing agreement that such support could empower pastors to be more effective in evangelism, ultimately contributing to church growth. Furthermore, 73.3% of respondents believed that church members’ spiritual growth was positively influenced by pastors who actively engaged in evangelism. These findings provide valuable insights into the perceptions and beliefs of church members regarding the roles of pastors in evangelism and their potential impact on church growth within the studied religious community.

THE PASTOR’S ROLES IN EVANGELISM AND ITS EFFECT ON THE CHURCH
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1                BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

In recent decades, the role of pastors in evangelism has been a subject of significant interest and debate within the Christian community. Pastors, as spiritual leaders of the church, play a crucial role in guiding and nurturing the faith of their congregations. Evangelism, on the other hand, is the act of spreading the message of the Gospel and inviting others to embrace Christianity. The effectiveness of pastors in carrying out evangelistic activities can have a profound impact on the growth and vitality of the church. This chapter provides an introduction to the research topic, outlines the objectives of the study, and presents the significance and rationale for investigating pastors’ roles in evangelism and its effect on the church.

The biblical foundation for pastors’ involvement in evangelism can be traced back to the teachings and example set by Jesus Christ and the early apostles. Throughout the New Testament, we find numerous instances where Jesus commissioned His disciples to proclaim the Gospel and make disciples of all nations. In Matthew 28:19-20, commonly known as the Great Commission, Jesus said to His disciples, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (ESV). This commandment extends to pastors today, as they are entrusted with the responsibility of carrying out the mission of the church.

Furthermore, the book of Acts provides examples of the early apostles actively engaging in evangelism and spreading the message of salvation. For instance, in Acts 8:4, it is recorded, “Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word” (ESV). The apostle Paul, in his letters, emphasized the importance of evangelism and the role of pastors in equipping the church for this task. In Ephesians 4:11-12, Paul writes, “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (ESV). This passage highlights the role of pastors, along with other ministry gifts, in equipping believers for the work of evangelism.

The significance of pastors’ involvement in evangelism lies in their unique position as shepherds and spiritual leaders of the church. They have the opportunity to influence and guide their congregations towards a missional mindset, encouraging believers to actively participate in evangelistic efforts. Pastors can provide teaching, training, and support to equip their members to effectively share their faith with others. By emphasizing evangelism, pastors foster a sense of purpose and mission within the church, leading to spiritual growth and community impact.

The rationale for investigating pastors’ roles in evangelism and its effect on the church stems from the observed variations in the level of involvement among pastors and their impact on the church’s growth and vitality. Some pastors actively engage in evangelistic activities, recognizing its significance in fulfilling the Great Commission and fostering church growth. Others may focus more on pastoral care and discipleship, potentially leading to a decreased emphasis on evangelism. Understanding the reasons behind these differences and their implications for the church is essential for fostering effective ministry and ensuring a holistic approach to the mission of the church.

Moreover, societal changes and the emergence of new communication technologies have presented both challenges and opportunities for evangelism. Investigating how pastors adapt to these changes and utilize new tools and strategies can shed light on the evolving role of pastors in evangelism and provide insights into effective approaches in reaching out to the world.

1.2 Statement of Problem

A major problem faced by pastors in evangelism is the lack of effective strategies and support systems to enhance their effectiveness in reaching out to others with the Gospel message. While pastors are called to fulfill the Great Commission and play a vital role in equipping and mobilizing their congregations for evangelistic activities, they often encounter challenges that hinder their effectiveness. These challenges may include limited resources, inadequate training, time constraints, and cultural barriers. As a result, pastors may struggle to engage their congregations in evangelism, leading to a stagnant or declining focus on outreach within the church.  Pastor’s roles in evangelism

Our research intends to address this identified problem by investigating the roles of pastors in evangelism and analyzing the impact of their involvement on the growth and spiritual development of the church. By examining the biblical basis for pastors’ engagement in evangelism and exploring the various roles they assume, we aim to provide a theoretical foundation for effective pastoral involvement in evangelistic activities. Additionally, through an analysis of the challenges and barriers faced by pastors, we seek to identify practical strategies and recommendations that can empower pastors to enhance their effectiveness in evangelism. This research will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on pastoral ministry and provide insights and resources to support pastors in their evangelistic efforts, ultimately fostering a renewed emphasis on evangelism within the church and facilitating its growth and impact in the community.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this research is to explore and analyze the roles of pastors in evangelism and examine how these roles influence the church. To achieve this objective, the following specific objectives will be pursued:

  1. To examine the biblical basis for the involvement of pastors in evangelism.
  2. To investigate the various roles that pastors assume in evangelistic activities.
  3. To analyze the impact of pastors’ involvement in evangelism on the growth and spiritual development of the church.
  4. To identify the challenges and barriers faced by pastors in carrying out effective evangelism.

1.4 Significance of the Study

Understanding the roles of pastors in evangelism and their effect on the church is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, the church is called to fulfill the Great Commission, which mandates the spread of the Gospel to all nations. Pastors, as leaders of the church, have a vital role in fulfilling this commission by equipping and mobilizing their congregations for evangelistic activities. Secondly, exploring the impact of pastors’ involvement in evangelism on the growth and spiritual development of the church can provide insights into effective strategies for church growth. Thirdly, this study can contribute to the existing body of knowledge on pastoral ministry and provide practical recommendations for pastors to enhance their effectiveness in evangelism. Additionally, understanding the challenges and barriers faced by pastors in evangelism can help in developing support systems and resources to overcome them.

1.4 Justification for the Study

The rationale for this study stems from the observed variations in the level of involvement of pastors in evangelism and its impact on the church. While some pastors actively engage in evangelistic activities, others may focus more on pastoral care and discipleship. Understanding the reasons behind these differences and their implications for the church is important for fostering effective ministry. Furthermore, rapid societal changes and the emergence of new communication technologies have influenced the landscape of evangelism. Investigating how pastors adapt to these changes and utilize new opportunities can shed light on the evolving role of pastors in evangelism.

1.5 Scope and Limitations
