Abstract:

This study utilizes both Airborne Magnetic and Radiometric datasets to investigate the geology and geological structures hosting gold and other solid minerals within the Bida (Sheet 184) and Zungeru (Sheet 163) regions. The study area spans approximately 55 by 110 km, encompassing the Cretaceous sediments of the Bida Basin and the meta-sediments of the Zungeru-Sarkin-Pawa schist belt. The data interpretation primarily focuses on mapping geological structures, boundaries, and potential gold mineralization veins associated with hydrothermal altered zones.

Mathematical algorithms, such as the Reduce-to-the-Equator and Analytical Signal, were applied to enhance the magnetic data. Additionally, Potassium (K), Thorium (Th), Uranium (U), and Ternary images of the radiometric data were used to aid in delineating the NW-SE trending contact that separates the Cretaceous sedimentary formations from the meta-sediments. This trend extends from the Southern end of Bida to its Western end. Fractures, folds, and contact zones were mapped using the first vertical derivative and CET analysis, with a concentration of such structures observed around the meta-sediments, particularly in the Northern part of the study area.

Linear faults and fractures trending NE-SW were identified around the Zungeru-Yakila-Katako axis, ranging from 2 to 5 km in length within the mylonite formation at the Northern end of the study area. Additionally, interconnected short fracture zones were observed below the Federal University of Technology Minna main campus, encompassing the Minkwogi, Sunbwagi, Sabon-Dagga, Kakagi, and Bobo Shiri areas, occurring within the magmatite belt type meta-sediment complexes.

The results from the Analytical Signal, Vertical Derivative, Eular Deconvolution, and CET-plugin analyses indicated that most of these structures and their depths were located in the Northern and southwestern regions of the study area. Notably, the coordinates of these major structures and lineaments, which indicate degrees of mineralization, were mapped on the CET map, revealing a significant concentration between longitude 6˚20’E to 6˚30’E and latitude 9˚10’N to 9˚30’N. The presence of medium to coarse-grain biotite granite intrusions within the meta-sediments serves as evidence of structural control veins, coinciding with regions of hydrothermally altered zones on the ternary map.
