YORUBA TRADITIONAL MUSIC (EDUCATION PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)
ABSTRACT
This project examines the songs used in performing kete music of the Igboora people a community in Oyo State. This research work will identify some traditional music used in performing kete, the functions of such music, the role and the kind of dance performance that accompany it.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The traditional music in Nigeria for example possesses attribute on which the value is based, traditional music in Nigeria is not just practiced for mere entertainment. It serves as an art influences general life of the members of the society that is why there is music for every human endeavour.
African music is an art that facilitates communion experience among the people because Africans are fond of celebrating life rites. Every rite has it’s own music, for example to the Birth of baby, initiation into adulthood or age grade, marriage and even death are all events for celebration, more often than not, with music.
African music is closely associated with complex rhythms loud drumming. Apart from all these, other numerous event for celebration happen during the life span of a person such undoubtedly call for music making. As a person grow he passes through various stages of life. It is cultural that people practice, a type of games, various occupation and form themselves into different societal or organization.
All these activities and systems of living form the various ways through which the society develops.
Broadly, the main concept of African culture is to say that it is a way of life. Cradle songs are not just practiced for fun they are done to develop the babies who would gradually become adults to be useful in the various endeavors of life.
The role of Yoruba traditional music cannot be over-emphasized among Africans as it pertains to all of their social works, cultural activities, recreational activities. All these activities have specific type of attached to them.
