ABSTRACT
This study is centered on the “Assessment of Cooperative Society on Economic Empowerment of it members” (A Case study of Akwapoly Multipurpose Cooperative Limited). To accomplish this research objective, the study adopted the survey research design while convenience sampling technique was used to select (50) as sample size and the respondents for the study. Instrument used for data collection was a self developed questionnaire and the forms were personally administered. Data analysis technique employed was descriptive statistic which involved the use of simple frequency tables and percentages. The study revealed that the role of cooperative society in economic empowerment of it members include to foster economies of scale, provision of higher income, mobilization of resources for income generation. The study also found out that the strategies for empowering members of cooperative society includes training of member in skill acquisition, facilitation of financial services, employment creation for members. The study also revealed that the challenges faced by cooperative society in the economic empowerment of it members includes lack of finance, lack of business technique and mismanagement. Lastly, the study revealed that the solutions to challenges faced by cooperative society in the economic empowerment of it members include training of members and committee members, encouragement of internal capital formation, encouragement of members participation through improved services. It is however recommended among others that since increase income level is attributed to membership effect, as such cooperative should encourage people to join the society and also encourage to participate in the economic activities of the society.
