INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the study

In the realm of education, a teacher is someone who educates students. The employment of a teacher is often formal and long-term. It is taught as a profession or vocation in a school or other place of formal education. Learning is defined as the acquisition of new or changing knowledge, attitudes, talents, or preferences, as well as the synthesis of various types of information (Adeyanju, 1997). Learning and teaching are two things that a certified teacher is concerned with. Learning is a challenging endeavor. This may be described as a change in routine; a long-term shift in behavior affected in part by the event. Learning may occur as a consequence of newly acquired skills, knowledge, perspectives, facts, ideas, and information (Adeyanju, 1997). A variety of teaching methods that engage, motivate, and focus students’ attention throughout the class may help them learn more effectively.

Teaching methods relate to the resources and tools used in schools to facilitate teaching and learning (Agunet et al., 1977). Teaching techniques include visual aids, audio aids, physical objects, and a range of other educational tactics. Items that may be manufactured at home or in a corporate environment are known as visual aids. For example, they may take the form of wall maps, visual pictures, photos, and other two-dimensional artifacts. There’s also audiovisual content to think about. Radios, TVs, and different projectors are examples of audio-equipped teaching devices. Television and radio broadcasts are another efficient way to educate geography. It is also usual to employ movies as a teaching tool. Aside from aiding students in memorizing important information, teaching methods have additional benefits. They may help to catch and hold students’ attention when applied effectively. Auditory or video material may be quite useful in aiding a subject, and mixing audio and visual stimuli is especially useful since it activates two of the most important senses (Burrow, 1986). Teachers must recognize that they are akin to concept salesman, and that they should examine many of the best sales methods for enticing potential customers. One of the fundamental purposes of any course is for students to learn as much as they can about the subject, especially the most important aspects. Many studies have been carried out to determine how successful teaching methods are in accomplishing this aim. The studies’ findings vary from modest retention gains of 10 to 15% to more favorable results of up to 80% retention (Burrow, 1986).

The efficiency of the tools, as well as the ease with which they may be developed, can both be enhanced by planning them out as a draft ahead of time. It’s easier to make changes and updates now than it is after the project has been completed. In the initial draft, technical accuracy, accurate terminology, grammar, spelling, basic balance, clarity, and simplicity must all be carefully checked. In addition, teaching materials should be evaluated to see whether they are feasible and suitable for students to use in a training situation. Nigeria’s education system, on the other hand, is in poor shape, with inadequate classrooms, instructional materials, laboratories, and libraries, as well as teacher qualifications. As a consequence, there is a lack of quality in school curricula and instructional procedures. The purpose of this research is to assess the quality of education in Nigeria and to look at teaching methods, particularly in secondary schools in Lagos State.

1.2. Statement of the problem

For a long time, research has been conducted in Nigerian o, as well as in Nigerian schools. The bulk of the content concentrates on the importance of teaching aids rather than whether or not these instructors have the appropriate pedagogical skills or how successfully they are used by teachers. Due to the dearth of such study, the main actors in education were left with little information with which to engage. This study was based on the premise that a lovely book or globe, for example, is worthless if it is not used. Teaching methods are important and desired in today’s world. Teachers may use speakers, online streaming movies, interactive whiteboards, visualizers, response systems, CDs, projectors, instructional software, and other contemporary teaching tools to present topics more efficiently and lucidly. When effective teaching strategies are available but not used, pupils do not benefit (Joy et al., 2002). Hence the need to look into the impact of poor teaching technique on the academic achievement of students .

1.3       Purpose of Study

The purpose of the study was to address the gaps in information that most scholars have not addressed regarding state of education and learning conditions in Nigeria. In particular, the purpose was to investigate the impact of poor teaching technique on the academic achievement of students.

1.4 Objectives of the study

The objectives of the study were:

1.        To examine if the availability of skillful teachers aids students academic performance.

2.        To evaluate the impact of poor teaching technique on students academic performance.

3.        To investigate the teaching technique most used by schools teachers in Nigeria.

4.        To identify how to improve teachers teaching technique in other to improve students academic performance.
