Abstract:

Child deprivation remains a critical issue of concern in the 21st century, garnering attention at both the global and national levels. Despite the implementation of various policies and strategies by the Nigerian government to reduce child deprivation, the problem persists and has evolved into a complex phenomenon, affecting various dimensions of human and social behavior, and contributing to environmental degradation.

This research aims to address the nexus between child deprivation and environmental degradation in Bida Town, located in the regional headquarters of Nupe Kingdom, Nigeria. By adopting a multi-dimensional approach and employing mapping techniques, child deprivation across 12 neighborhoods in Bida Town was analyzed. The study involved 213 households, selected through multistage sampling, and data was collected through targeted physical and socio-economic surveys using the KOBO Collect toolkit.

The findings reveal that 8.3% of children in Bida experience multidimensional deprivation, while 72.4% face deprivation in a single dimension. The study also computed an aggregate multidimensional deprivation index of 0.62 with an intensity of 0.81. Additionally, nutritional Z-Score for the children was found to be 1.5.

The research highlights diverse cases of child deprivation, encompassing areas such as Education, Assets, Health, and Living conditions. Variations in deprivation levels were observed across neighborhoods, ranging from high to very low deprivation, and from ultra-deprived to non-deprived households.

Considering the unique and varied nature of child deprivation in Bida Town, the study advocates for locally tailored interventions targeting specific child needs, rather than relying solely on broad national or regional anti-poverty programs. By understanding the multi-dimensional nature of child deprivation and its link to environmental degradation, policymakers and stakeholders can make informed decisions to effectively combat this pressing national problem.
