Consider the Student: Learner-Centered Methodologies to Impact Students’ Oral English Acquisition and Fluency

Session Type: Workshop Sub-Theme: TRACK 1. English Language Pedagogies and Applied Linguistics (Learner motivation and engagement, teaching language skills, and task and project-based language teaching) Target Audience: 25-50 Participants made up of English teachers and practitioners Equipment: Projector The workshop will focus on methodologies to engage students and provide them with increased opportunities to practice their oral English skills. The introduction will draw from current literature on language acquisition to provide teachers and practitioners insight on why students need to engage in interactive activities in order to acquire oral English skills. The workshop will be highly interactive with participants engaging in three different learner-centered English activities. After the participants have had the opportunity to engage in the activities the facilitator will lead the participants through a think tank activity to provide an opportunity for teachers and other practitioners to work in groups to consider where in their current curriculum, they may be able to utilize the activities. The facilitator will also provide the participants with lists and links to additional materials for learner-centered English activities.  The result of the workshop will be that participants are better equipped and further engaged to begin implementing learner-centered methodologies within their classrooms.
