DETERMINATION OF SOME TRACE ELEMENTS IN RAW PERIWINKLE Tympanotonus fuscatus

ABSTRACT

Periwinkle (Typmpanotonus fuscatus) is among the sea foods widely consumed by people living in the coastal region of Nigeria, the determination of trace elements concentration in raw periwinkle from Ifiayong Creek in Uruan Local Government Area was done by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (UNICAM 919) and the mean of duplicate determinations of Fe, Cu, Co, Cd, Pb and Zn were 17.255mg/kg, 0.71mg/kg, 0.13mg/kg, 0.03mg/kg, 0.015mg/kg and 0.12mg/kg respectively, the results above as compared to standards from FAO/WHO, (1999, 1984) were below the permissible limits and thus, poses no health issues if consumed. This low concentration is attributed to the absence of industrial discharge into the creek.
