Abstract:
This study aims to assess the impact of staff attitudes and information flow systems within Health Management Systems at a general hospital in Niger State. The research addresses the gaps resulting from staff attitudes, the challenges faced, and proposes strategies for improvement in general hospitals across Niger State. The research employed a descriptive survey design, utilizing self-administered questionnaires for data collection. The study encompassed a population of 1045 hospital staff and 2209 patients, with sample sizes of 278 and 327 respectively, determined using the Kerjgie and Morgan table. Out of 605 distributed questionnaires, 383 were returned and analyzed. Findings revealed that 45.5% of staff agreed that information was primarily communicated through verbal directions to treatment areas, while 49.7% relied on announcements within the vicinity. Moreover, information flow was observed to be deficient in general hospitals across Niger State (7.9%). The study indicated that positive staff attitudes play a pivotal role in enhancing service quality (53.7%), and that personal commitment to the profession significantly influences behavior (55.1%). Inadequate communication was found to worsen patients’ conditions (43.7%). Proposed solutions include using radio and television jingles to bridge communication gaps, making announcements at strategic locations to keep patients informed, and implementing electronic systems for efficient patient information management, thereby reducing congestion and wait times. The study recommends providing medical personnel with extensive ICT training to facilitate effective service delivery.
