EFFECTS OF LEARNING MATERIALS ON THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS (EDUCATION PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)

- INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
The use of learning materials in teaching and learning process of mathematics in the classroom have been neglected in most school, both primary and secondary throughout Nigeria most primary and secondary teachers are yet to appreciate the importance of teaching materials in the process of teaching and learning. There are group always conceive instructional media as synonymous with the chalkboard, but current innovation in educational technology have shown that there is need for this group of teachers to look at learning resources as something more than teacher-chalkboard relationship.
Soyemi (2000) it is a known fact that mathematics has a great impact to play in the institution, as a result there is a need to pay adequate attention at the grass road i.e the primary school. Infact, the usefulness of mathematics cannot be over emphasized in primary school because of extensive value acquire from the study.
As a result of this, efforts must be made by all stake holders to proffer solutions to the present yearly trends to mass failure in mathematics examination in order to help the country from the present situation by making it prepared to the challenges of the futureand the and new millennium.
Thus, this study is aimed at having a critical appraisal to effect of learning materials on the teaching and learning of mathematics in primary schools. Nigeria national policy on education (1981) recognized the importance and part of educational media in teaching learning situation. Yet, mathematics teaches don’t feel concerned about the use of learning materials for effective mathematics learning. Indeed, it is a fact that calls for a close attention doing most mathematics teachers bear a type of “I don’t care” attitude to issue of learning materials in their daily lessons.
Whatever reasons that may be attributed to their non-challant attitudes to the issue of learning materials. It must be realized and called to mind that one of the major causes of our student poor performance in mathematics in primary school in particular is the neglect of educational media of teachers of teaching mathematics concept.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
It Is obvious that many schools lack adequate mathematics teaching and learning materials in Nigeria societies as a result of non-paying attention.
Certain factors that constitute to this, among them are:
Mass failure in mathematics by student. Some mathematics teachers lack certain skills required for teaching. There is shortage of mathematics learning and teaching materials in primary schools. High percentage of pupils shows little or no interest to studying or learning mathematics.
