1.0       INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Information Technology (IT) has been defined by several authors in different ways.

Information can be viewed as description that shows details above something. It can be defined as raw data sent by an individual or an organization personnel to another person telling him or her details about what is happening.

Technology can be defined as the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and there inter-relation with life, society and environment drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science and pure science. It is derived from Greek word “technologia” meaning “systematic treatment”.

Therefore, Information and Technology according to Kehinde (2003) defined it as a mechanism used to process, store and transmit information. It is the convergence of various electronic data media with computers at the centre for the process of collecting, storing, processing and distributing information by electronic means.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) refers to technologies that provide access to information through the use of tele-communications. It is similar to information Technology (I.T), but focuses primarily on communication technology. This includes the internet, wireless network, cell phones and other communication mediums.

In the past few decades, ICT have provided society with a vast away of new communication capabilities. For example, people can communicate in real time both with others in different countries using technologies such as instant messaging, voice over I.P (VOIP) and Video Conferencing. Social networking websites like facebook which allow users from all over the world to remain in contact and communicate on a regular basis.

Modern ICT has created a “global village” in which people can communicate with other access the world as if they were living next door. For this reason, ICT is often studied in the context of how modern communication technologies affect society.
