ABSTRACT

The study sought to Investigate Public Perception of the Print Media Coverage of Mental Health Management,a Case Study of Federal Psychiatric Hospital, Calabar three research questions was tested. The health management questionnaire (HMQ) was designed and used for data collection. The questionnaire was drawn on a notified “A” and “B” sections. A sample of (200) two hundred staff which was drawn from (10) ten department using simple random sample technique. The simple frequency distribution analysis was used in analysis of the three research question. This result showed that health education, health information and health promotion. Play vital role in mental health management service in federal psychiatric hospital Calabar. Base on these results the researcher recommended that efficient and effective health education, health information and health promotion should be driven force by their usefulness to shaken holders as regard importance of their needs.

INTRODUCTION

  1.       Background of the Study

Print media according to section 2 of the newspaper act 1999 is defined as any paper containing public news intelligence or any remark, observation and comment there on printed for sale and published in Nigeria periodically or in art or number, but does not include any print media published by or under authority of the government. The power of print media to influence and form opinion makes it an industry like no other. Print media is the printed version of telling news primary through newspapers, magazines etc. it appears that print media is one of the oldest and basic form of communication. The contribution of the print media in providing mental health information and transfer of knowledge is remarkable. Even after the advent of electronic media, print media has not lost its charm and relevance. As a medium of communication, print media perform all the basic traditional functions of communication which are education, information and entertainment. These are not only function of print media as it is also used to champion the course of socio- cultural responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities include: the preservation of national values awareness campaign, grassroots development mobilization and opinion expression in form of open editorial among others.
