ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to assess redemption FM Radio programme “people’s right to know” and political development in Essien Udim Local Government. The objectives of the study were mainly to know whether residents of Essien Udim Local Goverrnment Area listens to the Redemption FM programme “people’s right to know”, to ascertain the extent of influence Redemption FM radio programme “people’s right to know” and political development among residents of Essien Udim Local Government Area and to know the contribution of the Redemption FM radio programme “people’s right to know” and political development to residents of Essien Udim Local Government Area.  A survey method was used for the study and the questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. A sample size of 384 respondents was used through a systematic random sampling.  The research reveals that majority of the residents of Essien Udim do not have access to the radio set and as such do not listen to Redemption FM radio programme while those that claim to have a radio sets says they do not have time to listen to the radio because they are mainly traders and are always busy in the markers. It was 300 of the respondents that agreed that they sometimes listen to the programmes but all the respondents claimed to be aware of political development to play significant role in their awareness. The research concludes that political development awareness campaign can be achieved in Essien Udim through the adoption of other means of communication. The research however recommends that there is need to adopt other channels of communication like mass/group rally with the use of churches, schools, market places and other appropriate strategies that will cut across all nooks and crannies of the local government.

  1. Background of the Study

Generally, the mass media has been able to fulfill the expectation of the masses through its many oriented programmes and messages carefully selected to educate, sensitize, inform and promote the cultural value of the society.

It is generally acknowledged that the mass media as one of the agent of socialization which inform, educates and entertains the public has a profound effect on the masses through its messages and programmes which are deliberately designed for the benefits of the masses  who rely heavily on its for information within and outside the globe.
