ABSTRACT

This research set out to interrogate the challenges faced by Nigerian immigrants as reflected in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah. To achieve this, the research utilizes post-colonial theory as a theoretical framework. Through a close reading of the text, the study reveals the interconnectedness between race, gender and class issues pose a major challenge for Nigerian immigrants as reflected through racism, stereotyping and economic pressure. The study further establishes that both men and women are faced with comparable experiences of the West however men choose to react to these circumstances differently. The research also reveals Adichie’s vision on how Nigerian immigrants respond to their experience in the West is crucial in order to achieve greater freedom and fulfilment from all forms of oppression. The study further establishes that Adichie envisions a world where Nigerians immigrants are supposed to be free, but on the contrary, they are victims of racial discrimination and economic exploitation. As a result, they have fallen status from middle class Nigerians to second class citizens.
