REVENGE MOTIFS AND SOCIAL CONTRADICTIONS IN SELECTED PLAYS OF SAM UKALA

Abstract

Revenge motifs are pockets of recurring actions which manifest in different ways in reaction to real or imagined wrong doing. Social Contradictions are those real or imagined wrong doings, or social inequalities which alienate individuals from their common wealth or social scheme of things. This study is about Revenge Motifs and Social contradictions in Sam Ukala’s selected plays modelled in Traditional Mode of Literary Expression. Traditional Mode of Literary Expression is a literary theory that uses cryptic or enlightened guile to make social comment. It allows a phenomenon to, indefinitely refer and be referred to something. The plays deal with the collapse of Ogiso’s dynasty due to revenge motifs and social contradictions propelled by both natural and supernatural forces. The collapse gave birth to a new nation – Ismaland which by further referencing presents a picture of an African state that resembles Nigeria. The problem is that not many scholars who have examined the plays of Sam Ukala have been able to make an in-depth critical examination beyond two or three textual explorations before making conclusions.  The result of this is that each critical submission produces a fragment of the total implication of the crucial social relationship prevalent in a feudal society like Ismaland. It seems again that, no critic has examined the plays from the imperatives of revenge motifs and social contradictions or seen the thematic interconnectivity of the nine plays. The objective of the research is therefore to ascertain whether the plays of Sam Ukala utilized revenge motifs and social contradictions and to examine the implications of revenge motifs and social contradictions in the texts. The conclusion is that the plays are interconnected thematically and that social contradictions engender revenge or revolution which is necessary for (positive) development in the society.
