Abstract

The study set out to examine the role of inter-ethnic marriages in the integration of peoples using Efik and Ibibio people of Southern Nigeria as a case study. The work assessed the origin, migration and settlement of the Ibibio and Efik people; the significance of marriage, conducting marriage in Ibibio and Efik land, the role of inter-ethnic marriages in the integration of people, advantages and disadvantages of inter-ethnic marriage, role of marriage in the integration of people and also the challenges of inter-ethnic marriages. The methodology adopted for the purpose of this research is purely historical, the sources used are mostly secondary sources, developed and written from evidences gotten from primary sources. Finding shows that inter-ethnic marriages significantly fosters peace and unity. It is therefore recommended that, the traditional institutions should be maintained and encouraged to evolve policies and programmes which can eradicate multi-generational trauma that may exist between tribes. Moreso, traditional institutions should accommodate diversity in the society.
