ABSTRACT

This research “explores the themes of Love and Betrayal in Sarah Ladipo Manyika’s In dependence”. It examines the diverse experiences and relationships of people in the society. This study also compares the experiences shared by men and women all around the world using the novel as a case in point. The exploration of love and betrayal in the cosmic reality of our environment is unraveled through the theoretical underpinning of New Historicism. New Historicism studies the history of the author and the history of the critic. The New Historicist also acknowledges that an examinations of literature is “tainted” by his own culture and environment. On a closer study of the text, the novel discusses the issues of race, gender, trust, betrayal and love. The research found out that the novel radiates with New Historicist’s stand point which embraces the idea that as time changes, so will our understanding of great literature. This research further establishes that both male and female are faced with comparable experiences in relationships: some bitter, some sweet, but how the character tends to handle the situation is the basis for this research. The research concludes that love and betrayal pervade Manyika’s In dependence.
