INTRODUCTION
- Background of the Study
Work attitude of lecturers determine to greater extent the academic achievement of students. In computer, The concept of garbage-in-garbage-out can explain better the ills of poor work attitude of lecturers in the achievement of students, Esu (2004). According to Bassey (2008) a lecturer who is not interested to cover the curriculum cannot really impact academically on the lives of the students. Denga (2000) describes that attitude determines what people do, think, act, their likes and dislikes. The students that enjoy teaching and develop interest in education will likely enjoy attending classes so as to receive lectures for better outcome, and a teacher who has the zeal for teaching will develop his time and interest.
Okoje (2001) remarked that as the schools, so as the teachers, as the teachers so are the students. It is true that the school environment influences the production of students and lecturers. The attitude of lecturers in teaching effectively, attendance in class, punctuality in class, as well as delivery of quality information to students contribute to a greater extent the academic achievement of the students. According to Enukoka (2004) lack of interest of teachers and students towards teaching and learning in education. These are responsible to the decay in the system, these attitudes resulted in the absenteeism of lecturers from classes, lateness to lectures, low incentive to work, some lecturers pay more attention to themselves order than delivery of lectures to students as scheduled in the timetable.
Some lecturers lack the callings hence see teaching as the only way out of unemployment. The result is always that of under utilization of potentials as the lack the interest to teach (Fish, 2001). Moreover, some of them lack teaching qualifications hence cannot fit in properly into the academic environment. There is therefore the need to investigate into work attitude of lecturers and students’ performance in education courses.
1.2 Statement of Problem
Education is the bedrock of every lives endeavour, students and lecturers are involved in this process of exchange information (Andrews, 2006). The level of information imparted by the lecturers affects the performance of students. Some lecturers and students do not attend classes regularly and this slows down learning. Furthermore, the quality of lecture students receive create exceeding impact in their performance. The poor attitude of students and lecturers towards learning, such as laziness, absenteeism from classes, procrastination, poor attitude to researches and some lecturers attached some importance to their individual business than teaching and despondency constitute major factors.
In order to address these problems, the research provides answers to the following questions.
– Does regular attendance in class affect students’ performance in examination?
– Does attitude of lecturers affect the performance of students?
