Abstract:

The increasing criminality rate in urban areas is a result of the government’s failure to provide sufficient security. City dwellers have become victims of various crimes, with more than half of these incidents occurring in neighborhoods. To combat crime, the implementation of building security components has been recognized as effective in preventing unauthorized access and safeguarding life and property. This study aims to investigate the relationship between building security components and neighborhood crime in Minna. A quantitative approach was adopted, utilizing structured questionnaires to collect data from 420 randomly selected residences in eight neighborhoods of Minna.

The study identifies four primary building security components that are most commonly employed for crime control in Minna, ranked according to their availability based on mean score values: door/window burglar proof (M = 2.91, ranked 1st), security lights (M = 2.85, ranked 2nd), security fence (M = 2.58, ranked 3rd), and security/entrance gate (M = 2.30, ranked 4th).

Furthermore, the study examines the impact of economic, demographic, and social factors on neighborhood crime in Minna, finding that each factor achieved a reliable level of influence (Cronbach’s Alpha value > 0.70): economic (0.83), demographic (0.79), and social (0.75).

Notably, the study reveals that between 2015 and 2020, Minna experienced relatively low cases of serious crimes, such as abduction (2.1%), murder (1.9%), armed robbery (0.9%), rape (2.8%), and kidnapping (0.5%). These statistics suggest a lower level of urban insecurity in the area during the specified period.

Furthermore, the study establishes a moderate negative significant relationship between the provision of housing security components and neighborhood crime rate in Minna (rho = -.396, p < .01). This implies that increased provision of housing security components corresponds to a lower neighborhood crime rate in Minna.

In conclusion, the study underscores the importance of adequate building security components in mitigating crime rates. Policymakers and stakeholders should prioritize the implementation of effective security measures to enhance urban safety and security in Minna.
