Telfaira occidentalis H.
ABSTRACT
Field experiments were conducted between April – May 2015, at the Botanical Garden of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua. Test plants were arranged in six rows of five replicates. Three rows were treated with poultry manure, while another three rows served as the control. Both leaves sample were harvested, cut into tiny, pieces, oven-dried and milled into powdery form. The powdered sample was analyzed for mineral contents using standard laboratory procedures. The chlorophyll contents of the plant were estimated using spectrophotometer. Summary of the effects of poultry manure on the growth parameters of Telfairia occidentalis, indicated that poultry manure significantly (P < 0.05) increased fresh shoot weight, dry shoot weight, fresh leaf weight, dry leaf weight, leaf length, leaf width, leaf number and leaf area respectively. Mean values of 14.00±11.41, 1.95±0.46, 11.54±0.57g, 1.47±0.400, 20.77±3.10, 7.50±3.12, 7.33±1.33 and 111.48±83.01cm2 were obtained from fresh shoot weight, dry shoot weight, fresh leaf weight, dry leaf weight, leaf length, leaf width, leaf number and leaf area in treated sample compared to the corresponding mean values of 31.14±3.94g, 3.56±0.64, 21.01±2.17, 2.77±0.66, 16.00±5.03, 4.96±1.33, 9.66±0.57 and 52.11±27.51cm2, recorded for the control. The results of poultry manure that poultry manure significantly (P < 0.05) decreased the chlorophylls a and b contents of T. occidentalis. Treated sample had mean values of 159.659±1.828 and 208.992±42.188 mg/FW for chlorophyll a compared to 162.255±7.667 and 224. 088±28.888 mg/FW obtained for the control. These findings proof that poultry manure is a good source of manure for Telfairia production.
