Abstract:

This study examines the current state of Building Information Modelling (BIM) adoption in the Nigerian construction industry, where low adoption levels have led to increased wastages, rework, time overruns, cost overruns, and strained relationships among project stakeholders. The research aims to enhance the readiness level of construction stakeholders for BIM adoption by assessing the industry’s preparedness.

A quantitative research approach was employed, and data were collected through a questionnaire survey from 127 construction professionals in the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Abuja, Nigeria. The collected data underwent analysis to obtain descriptive statistics, including frequency counts, percentages, and Meant Item Score (MIS).

The study findings reveal that the Design phase and Construction phase are crucial stages that necessitate BIM adoption, with MIS scores of 4.74 and 4.61, respectively. The essential prerequisites for BIM adoption readiness among construction firms in Nigeria are identified as Model-centric workflows, Collaboration and data management, and Integrated analysis, with MIS scores ranging from 4.53 to 4.55. Furthermore, the Construction and Design stages are where stakeholders exhibit the highest level of awareness regarding BIM adoption, with MIS scores of 3.76 and 3.73, respectively.

However, the study also identifies barriers to BIM adoption readiness in the Nigerian construction industry, including the lack of adequate BIM training, limited exposure to BIM concepts, and low levels of BIM technical know-how, with MIS scores of 4.19 and 4.10, respectively.

In conclusion, the study indicates that the level of readiness for BIM adoption in the Nigerian construction industry is average but is hindered by the aforementioned barriers. Therefore, it is recommended that the Government and all construction stakeholders take measures to incorporate BIM into academic curricula and provide the necessary technology and infrastructure to facilitate BIM adoption from the procurement processes onward in Nigeria
