ABSTRACT

This research project aims to investigate the influence of lecturers’ incivility on the acquisition of knowledge by Office Technology and Management (OTM) students in Federal Polytechnics in North Central Nigeria. Incivility in the classroom can have detrimental effects on students’ learning experiences and academic outcomes. This study seeks to explore the extent to which lecturers’ incivility affects the acquisition of knowledge among OTM students, identify the specific behaviors of incivility exhibited by lecturers, examine the consequences of such incivility on students’ learning experiences, and propose recommendations for addressing and mitigating the impact of lecturers’ incivility in the classroom.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys, interviews, and classroom observations to collect data from OTM students and lecturers in Federal Polytechnics in North Central Nigeria. The research objectives include assessing the influence of lecturers’ incivility on knowledge acquisition, identifying specific behaviors of incivility exhibited by lecturers, exploring the consequences of incivility on students’ learning experiences, and proposing strategies for addressing lecturers’ incivility.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the influence of lecturers’ incivility on the acquisition of knowledge by OTM students. The research will examine the extent to which incivility impacts students’ motivation, engagement, participation, and overall learning outcomes. Additionally, the study will identify specific behaviors of incivility exhibited by lecturers, such as disrespectful language, belittlement, favoritism, unfair grading practices, and lack of responsiveness to student inquiries. Furthermore, the research will explore the consequences of lecturers’ incivility on students’ learning experiences, including decreased academic performance, reduced confidence and self-esteem, increased stress and anxiety, and disengagement from the learning process. Based on the findings, recommendations will be proposed for addressing and mitigating lecturers’ incivility, encompassing faculty development programs, institutional policies, student support mechanisms, and communication strategies.

The implications of this research extend to lecturers, students, educational institutions, and policymakers. The findings will provide lecturers with insights into the impact of their behavior on students’ learning experiences, encouraging them to promote a positive and respectful classroom environment. Students can benefit from the research findings by understanding the effects of incivility and advocating for a respectful and conducive learning environment. Educational institutions can utilize the research findings to inform the development of policies and interventions that address lecturers’ incivility and promote a culture of respect and professionalism. Policymakers can consider the implications of the research when formulating guidelines and standards for teaching practices, ensuring the provision of quality education.

In conclusion, this research project investigates the influence of lecturers’ incivility on the acquisition of knowledge by OTM students in Federal Polytechnics in North Central Nigeria. By assessing this influence, identifying specific behaviors, exploring consequences, and proposing recommendations, stakeholders can work towards creating a supportive and respectful learning environment that fosters effective knowledge acquisition and enhances the overall educational experience.
