ABSTRACT

The study examined the social correlate and students academic choice of career in tertiary institutions. Three null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Expost facto research design was used in the study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 60 respondents for the study. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire titled Social Correlate and Students Academic Choice of Career Questionnaire (SCSACCQ). Data generated from the study were analyzed with Chi-square statistics. The findings showed that parental socio-economic status, educational qualification and parent occupation influence students choice of career in tertiary institutions. Recommendations were made that parent should allow their children to choose a career congrument to their intellectual abilities.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Social correlation is the relationship between paternal nurturance. This plays a very important role in the students’ choice. In most families parents decide for their children what type of career the children should choose. This parental correlate sometimes mislead their children. Olayinka (1973) stated that parental expectation may conflict with a child’s choice of current because the child may have different opinion from that of the parents. The parental educational qualification is one of the social correlate that has a strong determine on the children’s choice of career. Educational qualification certificates acquires. Ocho (2005) stated that it is a process through which the young acquires the ability to be useful to himself and others. Education is a agent that make man capable to contribute for the development as a capable member of the society. Onyia (1998) noted that, social economic position of an individual or a family in a given society determined by such factors as the level of occupation can also influence the students’ choice of career. Occupation can be defined as one’s regular, daily or immediate business or job, occupation, vocation profession, business, etc all concern the daily work one does especially to gain a livelihood. Career plays a very fundamental and significant role in academic choice and the life of the individual because it determines the pattern of income and affects the individual personality and concepts in life, (Hairstone 2000). Career therefore is a choose pursuit, life work or success in ones profession occupied by a person throughout his or her lifetime. Career is the totality of work one does in his life time and is person centered it is of utmost importance to every individual as he or she prepares for the further. Career choice is something very hard to decide especially as his life will depend on it. Her, (2003) indicated that career is the totality of experience through which one learns about and prepares to engage in work as part of his way of living. Splete (2010) stated that career is an enjoying process that occurs, schools and community. Every human being needs to do one job or the other to help contribute his quota to the development of the country. Hairstone (2000) stated that the occupational orientation of parents families student with occupational roles, while the value orientation of parents provides the learning environment that motivates the aspiration of students. Wilton (1975) stated that parental educational qualification and occupational background may influence students’ choice of career because most students’ may contemplate on whether to continue with their parents personality to match the qualities of the occupation in this regard therefore, the Guidance counselor is required in all the secondary schools for proper counseling.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This research is based on social correlate on students’ academic choice of career in Tertiary institution. The parental frustrated the student futures. This is because the student is not good in the subject related to the parent’s designed to find out the influence of social correlate on student’s career in tertiary institution. 1.3 Purpose of the Study The main purpose of this study is the find out the social correlation on students choice of career Specifically the study sought to: Determine how parent socio-economic status influences students’ career choice in tertiary institution. Fine out how parent Educational qualification influence students’ career choice in tertiary institution. Determine how parent occupation influence students’ choice of career in tertiary institution. 1.4 Significance of the Study This study will be of significance to the large society which education is meant to service students will benefit from the finding of this study it is established that parents pressure their wards into certain career for which the wards have no requisite success induce altitude interest, ability etc, by programming them to fail. This study will help the parents to always allow their children to choose a career congrument to their intellectual abilities.

This study will be of significance to the large society which education is meant to service students will benefit from the finding of this study it is established that parents pressure their wards into certain career for which the wards have no requisite success induce altitude interest, ability etc, by programming them to fail. This study will help the parents to always allow their children to choose a career congrument to their intellectual abilities.
