INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY NEEDS AND WORK PERFORMANCE EFFECTIVENESS OF OFFICE SYSTEM MANAGER

ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to investigate how Information Technology influenced the Office System Managers to cope with the work performance effectiveness in the office. Ex-post Facto research design was used in the study.  Sixty-two (62) secretarial staff were used for the study. A questionnaire titled Information and Communication Technology and Work Performance Effectiveness of Office System Managers (ICTWPEOSM) was used for data collection.  The validity of the instrument was ascertained by two experts in evaluation and measurement. Data from sixty-two (62) completed questionnaire forms were used for analysis. Data generated in the study were analyzed using statistical analysis. The results showed that Information Technology enables the Office Systems Manager to cope with the work performance effectiveness. Recommendations were made to Secretaries to attend workshops and courses on Information Technology.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

 1.1   Background of the Study

Information and communication Technology (ICT) no doubt is a recent development that has taken the entire world as a storm. Although computer is the major instrument for Information and Communication Technology, there is more to it than mere knowledge of computer operation. Information and Communication Technology is a whole programme for vast purpose aimed at making communication easier, faster and simple.

According to Nwachukwu (2009), Information Technology is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, scope, communicate and/or disseminate information.    Information Technology is also defined as the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer based information systems, particularly, software application and computer hardware. Information Technology deals with the use of electronic computers and computer hardware to connect, store, protect, process, transmit and securely retrieve information, (Wikipedia, 2008).Nwachukwu (2009), Emphasis that modern Information Technology is largely dependent or development in computer and computer technologies (both hardware and software).

It is impossible to imagine an advanced society without considering Information Technology (Mehdi, 2005) Nwachukwu (2009), noted that it is rear to fine a field not influenced by Information Technology. Also, it has been recognized that it is rear to fine a field not influenced by Information Systems knowledge, and it is vital for managers because most organizations requires Information Technology in order to survive and succeed, (Nwachukwu 1983). This study therefore undertaken to find out how Information and Communication Technology influenced the office systems managers in the performance of effective work which includes production of account statements, using Microsoft excel, creating and producing presentation, using Microsoft power point, and interacting with the internet for sending and receiving information.

1.2   Statement of the Problem

Information and Communication Technology is a development. It is a new technology. Despite the fact that computer is a main instrument for Information and Communication Technology, there is more to it than mere knowledge of computer.

Many of the secretaries that were trained before the advent of information and Communication Technology, now try to be computer literate but without adequate knowledge of information and Communication Technology.

Ahukannah and Chukwumezie (2008) noted that development in Information and Communication Technology have altered the procedures and methodology for doing office work and therefore adopted work performance and effectiveness as well as new nomenclature.

This research study was designed to determine how Information and Communication Technology assists the office manager to cope with the work performance effectively in the office.

1.3   Purpose of the Study

The major purpose of the study was Information and Communication Technology (ICT) needs and work performance effectiveness of office system managers.

Specifically the Study Sought to;

  1. find out how skill spreadsheets influences work performance effectiveness of office system Manager.
  2. Examine how skill Microsoft power points Influences work performance effectiveness of office system Managers.
  3. Determine how skills in internet operation influences work performance effectiveness of office system Manager.

1.4    Research Questions

The following research questions directed the study:

  • How does skills in spreadsheets influences work performance effectiveness of office system manager.
  • How does skill in Microsoft power-points influences work performance effectiveness of office system manager.
  • How does skill in internet operation influences work performance effectiveness of office system manager.
