RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEACHERS INCESSANT STRIKES AND STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AT SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVEL (EDUCATION PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)

ABSTRACT

This study examines the relationship between teachers incessant strikes and students academic performance at secondary school level in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State. The rate at which teachers of secondary school levels go on strike has become a major concern not only to the government but also to every well meaning Nigerians. Strike is always an off shoot of an unsettled dispute between the employer and the employee and when allowed to latch it must definitely have its serious effect on the products of secondary school students. The population for the study consisted of fifty teachers and fifty students from five randomly selected schools in Sagamu Local Government Educational District Area of Ogun State. Data were collected through the use of questionnaire. The research questions were formulated at the level of significance.

  • What are the effects of teachers strike in the life of their students and the Nation?
  • Who is to blame for Teacher’s strike? Is it the Government, the teachers, the students or the Educational Policy?
  • Who benefits from Teacher’s strike?
  • What is the outcome of the strike?
  • What is the way-out?

The result indicated that teachers strike actions has significance on the students academic performance. Also, delay in payment of teacher’s salary has significant influence on the student’s academic performance, though there were no significant differences between the lukewarm attitudes of Government agencies in responding to teachers demand.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0       INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background of the Study

In recent times, teachers at the secondary level had at one or the other embarked on strike actions mainly in order to back up their demand, either from the state or federal governments.

For instance, the Nation-wide civil service strike on 5th February, 1993 was staged to demand for the reduction in the price of fuel which eventually brought about the 45% relief package to cushion the effect of government unrealistic policy (Daily sketch, February 6th, 1993 page 1).

Also, the Ogun State wing of the N.U.T went on strike both teachers of Primary and Secondary schools on the 4th of February, 1994 (Daily Times, February 5th 1994 page 3) to jointly fight the non-payment of salaries and allowances of Primary School teachers for a total of 54 months.

The year 1995 has also witnessed at least two strike actions at different times by the Nigerian Union of Teachers, demanding for Government attention to improve the lots of their members on virtual issues as the professionalization of teachers and implementation of the Teachers Salary Scale (T.S.S.)
